PDP govs, stakeholders yet to agree on zoning, others

GOVERNORS elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday held a series of meetings with interest groups within the party.

The meeting which started at 3.00pm was still ongoing as at 9:25pm.

Feelers from the meeting indicated that the governors were sounding out other stakeholders to find a common ground on the issue of zoning of party offices and the national convention.

A source privy to the meeting who pleaded not to be named for fear of retribution said, “The majority opinion during the meeting was that the issue of zoning should be left for the Zoning committee which is to be ratified by the National Executive Committee tomorrow (Thursday).

“The issue of the number of persons on the various committees is also being discussed. Once the number is agreed upon, the zones will the go back and ask states to make nominations then we take it from there.

“There was also the issue of outstanding congresses in a few states which must be addressed before the convention that is also being looked at.”

Asked what the fate of the embattled National Chairman, Uche Secondus is likely for be, the source said, “As things stand today, we have an acting National Chairman, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi.”

Some of the groups who met with the governors on Wednesday include: Ex-PDP Governors Forum, Ex-PDP Ministers Forum the Board of Trustees and the party’s National Working Committee.

Those who attended the meeting include: Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).

Others were: Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto),  Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta),Darius Ishaku (Taraba), Douye Diri (Bayelsa).

Former governors who attended include: Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Idris Ibrahim (Kogi),  Ibrahim Dankwambo (Kebbi),  Liyel Imoke (Cross River) Emeka Ihedioha (Imo) and Muazu Babangida Aliu (Niger).

Other senior members of the party at the meeting were: Former Senate President, David Mark, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), Pius Ayim, Uche Ekwunife, and Enyinnaya Abaribe.

‘NEC’ll announce decisions taken’

However, the Chairman, PDP Governors Forum, Aminu Tambuwal, said a final  decision on issues discussed by the governors and other stakeholders would be made public by the National Executive Committee on Thursday.

He announced this while briefing the press after a seven hour-long closed-door meeting on Wednesday.

He said, “We had a very fruitful meeting for about seven hours. We discussed issues that will improve our party and prepare us for the 2023 elections. We also received briefing from our candidate for the Anambra Governorship election. Decisions taken will be announced will be announced by NEC tomorrow (Thursday).”
