Many had thought that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would have strolled to a easy win in the just concluded election in Akure North/South Federal Constituency, it’s however a surprise seeing them being edged out of the race by the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The All Progressive Congress (APC) might have played its game well by working on its strengths and also complimenting its weaknesses, however the People Democratic Party (PDP) has itself to be blamed. This is because they have refused to learn from their errors in past elections in the State. They have refused to allow itself push past roots of sentiments which they have allowed grow strong amongst them.
Akure South was considered the strong hold of the PDP, because of many factors, however results showed that the PDP narrowly won in Akure South with a margin of over 600 votes, this meant that the APC had strategically crafted a plan to take the battle to the stronghold of the PDP, while they won Akure North convincingly.
Aside the fact that the PDP had not put up a strategic plan to wining this election, the emergence of Barr. Adu is one which had caused so many division in the Party, he was to many party members an unknown candidates who was packaged by certain people to hold the spot. The Primaries had caused so many ills among the members and there was no direct attempt to mend the broken fences which was caused as a result of the Primaries.
Also the PDP lacked strong party members who could have delivered critical wards for their candidate, something which the APC did just fine as their leaders came to the battle front, delivering the much needed figures to help the candidate of the APC.
There’s no foul play here, both parties played according to their wits, support were sought and money were given as expected, the highest bidder won. Party agents of the PDP must also be held accountable as they had in their own little way contributed to this loss, while they were given money to share at the polling units, it’s reported that many of them absconded with the money while some shared less than the allocated money.
we know the dice has been thrown and a winner has emerged,one who does not fly the flag of the PDP, maybe this might send a strong message to the PDP that election in the present day Nigeria is not just about Party popularity or current mood of the masses, it’s about having a united Party to push an agenda and also having a strong financial resources to back it up
