Abdulrasheed Bawa, a Deputy Chief Detective Superintendent with Nigeria’s flagship anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in what has been described as a record breaking appointment by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has been named the new Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC)
Mr. Babes born 40 years ago following his appointment and confirmation by the Senate becomes the youngest person to ever lead the Anti-graft agency which has been without a substantive hear since November 2015
Mr Bawa, born 40 years ago, will be the youngest person to ever lead the organization which has been without a substantive head since November 2015.
The appointment comes seven months after Ibrahim Magu was suspended as the acting Chairman of the EFCC by the Buhari administration amidst allegations of gross misconduct. Bawa, who is 40 years old, is one of the pioneer EFCC cadet officers from 2005. He is a currently the Lagos zonal head of the anti-graft agency.
Bawa holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics, and a master’s degree in international affairs and diplomacy.
He is the chief investigator in the alleged multi-billion naira fraud case against former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
He has undergone the following training, Certified Fraud Exerminer (CFE), Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI),United States Financial Crime Enforcement Network (FINCEN), The World Bank, The United Nations Office of Drug and Crimes The Nigeria Police Force, The Nigeria State Security Services, The EFCC Academy,United Kingdom’s Global Training Consulting.
Also he has handled various notable cases in Nigeria such as, Supervising the biggest operations zonal office of the EFCC in Lagos having 604 officers and men and securing 227 convictions despite the Covid-19 pandemic; Supervising the investigation of all cases in Port Harcourt Zonal office in which an unprecedented 215 convictions were secured in eleven months and securing Final Forfeiture of hundreds of properties to the Federal Government.;
A) Supervising the investigation of all cases in the Ibadan Zonal office in which 113 were concluded and 54 are charged to court within 6 Month.
B) Diezani Alison-Madueke-2015-Date: Recovered Millions of Dollars worth of properties in Nigeria, UK., USA, and UAE including 92 properties in Nigeria.
C) Atlantic Energy Group-2014-2015: Recovered Millions of Dollars worth of properties in Nigeria, UK, USA, Switzerland, UAE and Canada.
D) Crude Oil Swaps and OPA-2014-2015: Recovered Billions of Naira.
E) Petroleum Subsidy Fraud-2012-2015: identified Fraud of about N70Billion, Recovered Billions of Naira and Prosecuted several companies.
F) Former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu
G) “Operation Cyber Storm One”, across Nigeria in which over 60 Suspected Advance Fee Fraudsters and Cyber Crime Perpetrators are on prosecution- 2008
H) Participated in several other Periodic Raid on Notorious (419) Cyber-cafés.
Accolades must be given to President Muhammadu Buhari for giving room for this unprecedented feat to be recorded, the nation Nigeria is at a critical time where there is a massive advocacy for the inclusion of youths in the critical and salient affairs of the state. For the President to have given such an highly important office to Abdulrasheed Bawa at the age of 40years, it shows the huge faith of the presidency in him and his ability to leaf the agency even at this critical period when the nation is currently plagued with numerous corruption cases.
While the Nigerian populace celebrates President Muhammadu Buhari for this huge step taken, it is the hope of many Nigerians that Abdulrasheed Bawa, will go on to make meaningful and positive achievements even as he leads the agency for the next few years.
