The build-up to the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria has been nothing but exciting, one that has continued to thrill Nigerians with the various unfolding narratives within our political circles. While the major parties within the nation’s political terrain will hope to present a candidate which they hope will get the much needed figures to replace the incumbent and outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari, both parties will definitely have a swell time as they try to present that one candidate who will sway the people off their seat to eventually emerge winner.
While the All Progressive Congress [APC] in the last few months has seen some candidates coming out to express their interest, there is no doubt that they have quite some heavy weights who we can say have all it takes to contest the 2023 presidential election. A candidate who can easily appeal to all the ethnical and religious groups in the nation without raising dust. However, the onus rest on the People’s Democratic Party[PDP] to come up with a credible and acceptable candidate who will satisfy the political yearnings and demands of majority of the nation’s political stakeholders.
While the zoning arrangement of the PDP has continued to generate several conversation and arguments in recent times, with many of the opinion that the slot should be given to a northern candidate while some of the opinion that it should go to the South-East.
We must bear it in mind that a wrong move by the PDP in picking their presidential candidate will no doubt militate against their chances at the presidential polls come 2023, and if there is to be a political solution which all groups across the various sub political divide in the PDP can agree to, it must be to field the immediate past president of the nation, Goodluck Jonathan. While there has been various murmuring in recent time over his role or interest in the coming presidential election in the Nation, especially with his recent romance with the All Progressive Congress, the People Democratic Party will be playing it wise if they are to pick Goodluck Jonathan.
By constitutional provision, he is only allowed a two term tenure if he is to win again, and having served one term already, he would only be required to serve just one term, which will allow other region to present their candidate. In this situation, either the North or the South-East can finally have the chance to present their candidates.
Also, if it were to go the other way, that is if Goodluck Jonathan were to be hijacked by the All Progressive Congress to fly their flag for the presidential election, the PDP would have themselves to be blamed. The APC has not made hidden their admiration for Goodluck Jonathan, who have continued to woo into their party. They have always celebrated and treated him as if he is already one of their own, while the PDP has continued to treat him like a common party member, hence they may have no argument to present if the APC should whisk him away from their hold.
The crux of this discourse is that, with former President Goodluck Jonathan, the PDP has in their hands a better candidate who they can present as their candidate for the fast approaching presidential election in Nigeria. The task is on them to strategically pick a candidate who will not cause internal division to the party even as they prepare for a battle against the All Progressive Congress who will definitely be fielding their best hand for the 2023 presidential election in the Nation.
