Okuku, Osun State – May 5, 2024: The peaceful town of Okuku was thrown into turmoil when police officers raided Ariya Global Hotel following allegations of a secret gay wedding. The event, which was reportedly held in secrecy, attracted attendees from surrounding communities, sparking outrage among residents and prompting swift action by local authorities.
The police reportedly acted on a tip-off from concerned residents who claimed the alleged wedding violated the community’s deeply rooted cultural and traditional values. The raid led to the arrest of numerous individuals, including lecturers and students from Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Okuku Campus, as well as the hotel owner, Mr. Kukoyi Adebanjo.
Speaking at a press conference after the raid, a police spokesperson explained the rationale behind the intervention: “We received credible intelligence about the event and acted to enforce the law and protect the cultural integrity of our community. Those who break the law will face the consequences.”
On May 11, 2024, the Nigerian Police paraded those arrested during the operation at Ariya Global Hotel. Among the suspects were five lecturers: Dr. Tunde Ibironke, Dr. Godwin Ramson, Mr. Ibidun Kunle, Mr. Hassan Ibrahim, and Mr. Ibukun Abati. Sixteen students were also named, including Seun Duro, Ade Ajanaku, Seyi Bambo, Duro Majekodunmi, Segun Akerele, Ibidun Adebisi, Maku Tayo, Shina Adekunle, Durajaye Mabe, Emmanuel Johnson, Chukuemaka Raymond, Sikiru Abubakar, Ade Idris, Olarewaju Kehinde, Chris Samson, and Idowu Bibilari.
The police also declared two hotel staff, Mr. Oluwafemi Akinola (the hotel manager) and Mrs. Arike Kuti (the receptionist), wanted. Both are alleged to have facilitated and participated in the event. During the course of interrogations, authorities uncovered information about additional suspects connected to the incident, many of whom are now on the run. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend these individuals.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Okuku community, which is known for its strong cultural and traditional values. Local leaders and residents have expressed outrage over the alleged activities, emphasizing the potential harm to the moral fabric of the community. Chief Abifarin Samuel, a prominent community leader, voiced the collective concern, saying, “Our community has always stood firm on upholding moral values, and we cannot tolerate activities that conflict with our traditions.”
The police spokesperson assured the public of their commitment to enforcing the law and called on residents to cooperate in tracking down the suspects still at large. “We are resolute in ensuring that the law is upheld, and those responsible will face justice,” the spokesperson stated.
As investigations continue, the arrested individuals remain in custody and are expected to be charged in court soon. The community of Okuku, now more vigilant than ever, awaits further updates on this unfolding case.
