A young man has allegedly hacked his 60-year-old aunt to death in Ipokia area of Ogun State on allegation of witchcraft
The alleged assailant, Dansu Asogba, 23, had on August 22, 2020, paid the said aunt, identified as Iyabo Dansu, a predetermined, life-snuffing visitation, to avenge the death of his first child and wife’s miscarriage, alleging the deceased of using the instruments of witchcraft to cause the mishaps on his family.
To accomplish his mission, Asogba, Crime Puzzle learnt, hit the victim with an iron rod on the neck, leading to her death.
Apparently taking the death in good fate, oblivious that it was man-made, family members went ahead to bury the corpse, shortly after which, inhabitants of the community, who saw Asogba in the late woman’s house, suspected a foul play at such a coincidence, wondering the suddenness in her death after the suspect’s visit and departure
They were said to have insisted on ensuring that they fished out the killer through traditional ritual means.
Getting to know of the planned ritual, coupled with his belief in its efficacy and the aftermath effect, the assailant openly confessed to the heinous crime, a development that shocked two of the deceased children, who had to lodge a complaint at Ipokia Division of the police.
DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), stated in a press release made available to this medium that: “Upon his confession, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Ipokia, SP Adebayo Hakeem, detailed his detectives to the scene, where the suspect was promptly arrested on Friday, September 11, 2020, adding that, “On interrogation, he admitted killing the deceased but claimed that he did so because of his belief that the deceased was responsible for the death of his first child and the subsequent miscarriage suffered by his wife.
“He confessed further that, it was an iron rod he used to hit the woman on the neck, which resulted to her death”, the PPRO said.
According the Command’s spokesman, Commissioner of Police in charge of the state, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation and prosecution, while also expressing concern over the suspect’s ignorance and primitive belief that the victim was behind the unfortunate incidents in his household.
Ajogun, according to the PPRO, however, warned that the Command would decisively deal with anyone who, for whatever reason, takes law into his or her hands, while also condemning such “ignorant behavior at this jet age”.
The CP enjoined the public to always take their grievances to law enforcement agencies for proper investigate rather than resorting to self-help.
