Akure North/South Federal Constituency Bye-Election: Examining the Chances of the PDP Candidate 

The Akure North/South Federal Constituency election which is slated for the 26th of February 2022 is one which presents the People Democratic Party [PDP] a strong opportunity to further establish their dominance in the Federal Constituency and judging by the various political interplay, structures and current mood of the people, if the PDP plays it game well, they might be heading for a flawless victory at the polls.

With the emergence of Bar. Olumuyiwa Adu as the party’s flagbearer, there are many factors which could to his favor, prominent among these factors is that over the last two decades, the Federal Constituency has become a major stronghold of the PDP. They have successfully made Akure, the Ondo State capital a major fort for the party. 

The various elections which has been conducted in the state, either at the state level or for federal positions, the people democratic party have always dominated as they have always emerged victors with convincing figures.

The election of the late Hon. Omolafe Adedayo into the Green Chamber is another example of the potency of the PDP to command popular support in the region. The Late Hon. Adedayo Omolafe had coasted to victory having won all wards in the federal constituency, a feat which was held by all and sundry to be unprecedented.

Furthermore, the popularity of the Late Hon. Adedayo Omolafe is one which might work to the favor of the PDP Candidate, despite his demise, there are still many political structures who remain loyal and committed to the camp of the departed lawmaker. 

Another critical factor which will definitely play to the favor of Bar. Olumuyiwa Adu is the role of PDP Chieftain who is also considered as the leader of the party in the State, Eyitayo Jegede. SAN. According to many political pundits, this is a chance for the two term Gubernatorial aspirant in the state to prove his mettle as a strong force in the state. Eyitayo Jegede is on a mission not just to deliver the seat for the PDP but also to establish himself as a strong force in the state. Failure to achieve this may put a great dent on his status and popularity in the state as a PDP leader.

Also another major factor which may play in the favor of the PDP in the coming election is the general dissatisfaction of the people regarding the continual rule of the APC in the nation. With the various clamor for change, this might negatively reduce the support for the candidate of the APC who many believe was imposed on the party by Senator Alasoduar. It has been said in numerous quarters that the candidate of the APC, Otunba Mayokun Lawson Alade is an unpopular candidate who is merely riding on the popularity of his god-father to run the race.
