A legal practitioner, A.O. Afolabi of Adesanmi Afolabi & Co., has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 17, Akure, requesting the release on bail of Mr. Ola Odunayo Lawrence, who has been in police custody since June 17, 2025.
According to the petition, Mr. Lawrence, a resident of No. 43, Ondo Road, Akure, was arrested by officers of the zonal command over allegations of involvement in homosexual activities. The petition, titled “Application for Bail,” emphasized that the suspect has been detained while investigations are ongoing.
Citing Section 36 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which presumes every individual innocent until proven guilty, Afolabi argued that continued detention of his client without bail is unconstitutional.
“We hereby humbly apply for the bail of our client, Mr. Ola Odunayo Lawrence. We want to assure you, sir, that we will provide credible sureties that will ensure the presence of our client at your office whenever his attention is needed,” the lawyer wrote.
The petition was addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police at the Zone 17 Zonal Headquarters in Ijapo, Akure. As of the time of filing this report, police authorities at Zone 17 have yet to comment on whether the bail request will be granted.
