The National leadership of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) is aware of delibrate attempts by a grade C human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju to dent the image of the Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi and by extension, the Nigeria Police Force with no justifiable but politically motivated and selfish reasons. A known ally of Mr Omoyele Sowore, a former Presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters whose unruly and unbecoming conducts from a former Presidential flag bearer is well known and no longer new to Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju in a video which went viral on Wednesday 5th February, 2025 made many negative remarks about the person of the Force PRO ACP Adejobi and the Nigeria Police Force.
No doubt on a paid mission, Deji and his law firm petitioned the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union, asking them to impose a visa ban on ACP Adejobi in a letter dated February 4, 2025 where he accused Adejobi of suppressing free speech and using his position to intimidate Nigerians critical of the government. While we do not have issues with Deji Adeyanju’s decision to exercise his fundamental human rights by freely expressing himself in writing through his law firm, we are worried that Deji and his sponsors at this age and time do not know that rights to free speech(s) have limitations not only in Nigeria but globally. If Deji has forgotten, we are sure Nigerians are yet to forget the devastating effects of various free but demonic and violence inspired speeches against government, individuals and even religious groups which has claimed the lives of many innocent Nigerians and led to avoidable devastating losses.
It is also surprising that Deji in his petition failed to inform the global community how the same Force PRO have on several occasions reccomended for disciplinary procedures, erring Police personnel in support of law abiding citizens with many now demoted in ranks, others dismissed and charged to court for capital offenses under the current Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD, NPM. One now wonders how the same man who on several occasions rose up and still stands against unprofessional conducts from Police personnel is now the one using his position to intimidate Nigerians in Deji Adeyanju’s dream. Since there’s a clear difference between law abiding citizens and the lawless ones, we have a feeling that those who usually patronize Deji are the lawless ones who have little or zero regards for our laws, especially the ones related to social media usage.
If our laws require a high level of decency and decorum in our usage of the social media especially when it comes to criticising individuals, corporate bodies or government to guide against actions or statements that are capable of causing issues or severe issues which may lead to breach of public peace, it is our responsibility to ensure that expressions are decently made without abbusive and defamatory statements. This is not too much a price for us to pay considering the dangers involved when everybody, including the sane and insane are left on our social media spaces without regulations. The Police are law enforcement agents and as such should not be subjected to personal attacks for enforcing the laws made by the people through their representatives. We have seen many people, especially traffic seeking social media users and bloggers go overboard with unsubstantiated and fake news alert without thinking of the huge negative effects to the larger society as long as they attract huge traffic.
One can easily read between the lines and understand that Deji is on a personal vendetta against Adejobi who is doing nothing but enforcing the law made by Nigerians while he Deji is constantly on the side of those who derives pleasure in breaking the law. Since prevention is better than cure, no government including Nigeria, United States, UK, Canada and others too numerous to mention will turn a blind eye on social media gangstarism that is currently being exhibited by Deji and his likes under the guise of human rights activism. We recommend that Mr Adeyanju take some lessons from reputable human rights organisations like CDHR, HRGDS, CLO and other notable rights groups who usually show up for law abiding citizens and not the lawless ones who have turned Mr Adeyanju’s law firm to their Holy land.
A raggae music without vocal style and tempo can not make the list of Alaba music awards not to talk of the Grammys. Mr Adeyanju must do better next time with the right Instrumentations, harmony and rhythm.
