Okuku, Osun State – On May 5th, 2024, the usually quiet town of Okuku was thrown into turmoil when police officers conducted a raid on Ariya Global Hotel, reportedly in response to an alleged gay wedding taking place at the venue. The event, shrouded in secrecy, had drawn attendees from various parts of the state, sparking outrage and swift action from local authorities.
According to sources, the police were tipped off about the wedding by concerned residents who believed that such an event went against the deeply rooted cultural and traditional values of the community. Homosexuality is not only socially stigmatized in Nigeria but also criminalized under the country’s laws.
The raid, led by DSP Emmanuel Ajayi, resulted in the arrest of lecturers and students from Osun State University, Okuku Campus. The owner of Ariya Global Hotel, Mr. Kukoyi Adebanjo, was also detained.
In a press conference held shortly after the raid, DSP Ajayi explained that the police had acted on credible information and were enforcing the state’s laws prohibiting same-sex unions and activities. “We received reliable intelligence about the event and had to intervene to uphold the laws of the state and protect the cultural integrity of our community,” Ajayi stated. “Those who break the law will be brought to justice.”
The news of the raid and subsequent arrests has sparked reactions within Okuku and residents who have applauded the police’s swift action. Community leaders have weighed in, emphasizing the importance of adhering to cultural norms and legal statutes.
Chief Abifarin Samuel, a prominent local leader, commented, “Our community has always upheld strong moral values, and we cannot condone activities that go against our traditions. As the investigation continues, the suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be charged in court soon. For now, the residents of Okuku are left grappling with the implications of the raid and its impact on their community.
