The Coalition of Ogun-East Youth Forum under the umbrella of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the State has sent its appreciation to Punch Newspapers for acting swiftly and suspending the state correspondent of the newspaper as appealed recently in a communique by the forum.
The socio-political group described the suspension as a welcome development.
The group in a statement released by the convener, Comrade Akeem Akilo noted that it takes a lot of courage and integrity to take such action, especially in a world where fake news has become rampant and damaging.
In the statement, “The decision of the management of Punch Newspapers to sack its staff, Mr Daud Olatunji for publishing fake news against Superflux International Limited and the person of Ogun SSG, Mr Tokunbo Talabi is a welcome development. It takes a lot of courage and integrity to take such action, especially in a world where fake news has become rampant and damaging.
“The attention of our organization, COALITION OF OGUN EAST YOUTH FORUM (COEYF) was called to the concocted story that was published by this Daud Olatunji and as a matter of urgency, we issued a communique to demand his sack. Yesterday, the news of the termination of his employment by the Punch Newspapers got to us and we are happy about it.
“On behalf of the COALITION OF OGUN EAST YOUTH FORUM (COEYF), I am writing to express our admiration for this decision. Your decision to uphold the values of responsible journalism by holding your staff accountable for their actions is commendable. It sends a strong message to other media houses and journalists that the pursuit of truth and accuracy must always be at the forefront of our work.
“I applaud the management of Punch Newspapers for taking a stand against the spread of fake news and for reaffirming the organization’s commitment to ethical journalism. Your actions have not only restored faith in the media but also set a standard for others to follow. Thank you for your dedication to quality journalism, and I wish you continued success in your endeavours.
“And again, we are calling on the SSG, Mr Tokunbo Talabi and Superflux International Limited to take legal action against Daud Olatunji and others who are involved in linking him and the company with fraudulent activities”.
