It’s no longer a news as everyone in Nigeria and observers from outside the country are aware that the nation is in dire need of someone who is good at fixing economy.
The country has been plunged into economic abyss by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government in the seven years.
That the economy of the nation has been destroyed is an understatement, those at the helm of affairs have displayed ignorance about how a large economy is being managed.
It’s unfortunate that the country’s situation has deteriorated to the extent that its indebted to so many nation’s and financial bodies that it has been blacklisted by some of the creditors.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) government during its campaign promised to turn the Naira to a hard currency, but they ended up turning it to a currency which value falls everyday.
Prices of food go up geometrically because the nation could not feed itself despite the huge amount of money claimed to be injected into agriculture for the past seven years.
The Fulani herdsmen in the name of Miyetti Alah found pleasure in grazing of crops planted by farmers and many farmers ran bankrupt.
Some who dared resisted the herders were killed on their farms by the AK-47 wielding cow Fulani.
The body language of President Muhammadu Buhari suggested he was unperturbed by the heinous activities of his tribesmen.
No doubt, the citizenry still remember the only security challenge the APC-led government inherited was the Boko Haram insurgents group.
It would be the creates miracle of this generation if the APC-government could solve the current multifaceted security challenges before exiting in a couple of months’ time.
Currently, the issue of banditry, Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram/ISIS insurgency, secession agitations, particularly in the Southeast, are over overwhelming security challenges bedeviling the country.
Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has thrown his hat into the ring vying for the president so he can solve all these life-threatening problems.
He told Peoples Democratic Party’s delegates in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Sunday, while at the party’s Secretariat at Alagbaka to inform them he was in the race and sought their support for him to clinch the party’s ticket, what he would do when he gets to the presidency.
Point blank he said the kind of president the nation needs at this crucial time is someone who understands economy. Someone who has the expertise in fixing a collapsed economy. Someone who is capable of turning a consuming economy to a productive economy.
All these he declared he could do pointing to his record in Anambra State when he held sway as the governor.
He reeled out statistics on how the APC-led Federal Government had been running the country’s affairs without proper planning.
The Buhari-led government has shown that he was sailing the ship without any compass, hence the ship is heading for a wreck if the captain of the ship remains in control.
Explaining how the economy of the nation has been grounded by the APC-led Federal Government, Obi disclosed that in 2021, over 98 percent of total revenue generated was used for servicing loans.
He noted that the government was economical with the truth by telling Nigerians that it was borrowing to build infrastructure.
Obi disclosed that the APC-led government has succeeded in turning the country to a consumer nation because it only borrowed for consumption rather than investing the huge loans.
He emphasised that the decision of the government to borrow endlessly has plunged the nation’s economy into quagmire.
While addressing delegates at PDP, Obi said: “The country is collapsing. There is banditry everywhere, people got burnt while scooping fuel just because there’s no food to eat.
“This is caused by failure of government over the years. We have the highest number of people living in poverty. People living in poverty in Nigeria are more than those in Indian and China combined.”
This purgation was an eye-opener and many Nigerians could understand Peter Obi was on the same page with the people.
It’s glaring that the current government does not know how excruciating the present economic situation in the country is as it keeps claiming it’s trying its best for the people.
Over 80 percent of the population is not asking for too much, but just affordable food prices.
Many are dying of hunger and this current government does not seem to have answer to this.
The delegates of APC may have to think twice and see from the perspective of the poor Nigerians to elect who would be able to solve the nation’s socio-economic and political challenges as the candidate of their party for the general election.
