Lawmakers in the Ondo State House of Assembly have congratulated Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN on his victory at the Supreme Court in Abuja.
The candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mr Eyitayo Jegede had contested the candidature of Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN in the October 10th 2020 gubernatorial election in Ondo State at the Election Petition Tribunal in Akure, arguing that he was not properly nominated by his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his appeal, Mr Eyitayo Jegede among others requested the court to declare him winner of the October 2020 Gubernatorial election in Ondo State.
His request was however turned down as the Election tribunal, as well as the Appeal Court in Akure struck out the case in favour of Governor on the ground that the appeal lacked merit.
In a Supreme Court verdict on Wednesday, ruling was again given in favour of Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu SAN.
Four out of the seven man Jurists led by Justice Mary Peter Odili in a Majority judgment threw out the petition of Mr Eyitayo Jegede, SAN for lacking merit.
In a congratulatory message signed by the Assembly Spokesman Akogun Olugbenga Omole after the the court ruling, Lawmakers in the Ondo State House of Assembly described the verdict as a landmark in the dispensation of Justice in Nigeria.
Speaking through the Speaker, Rt Honourable (Prophet) Oleyelogun Bamidele David,the Lawmakers noted that the verdict was another victory for democracy.
While congratulating the Governor on this well deserved victory, the body of Lawmakers called on Mr Eyitayo Jegede to join hands with Governor Akeredolu towards enhancing the delivery of democracy dividends to the people of the state and for the spirit coexistence.
“Having gone through the lengthy judicial process, we thank God that the entire process was in favour of our action Governor”.
“Now that ruling has been given in favour of Mr Governor, he can now focus on his development agenda for the people of Ondo State as a major distraction has been removed” and come to an end.
While calling on the Governor to extend the olive branch to the opposition, the Lawmakers again expressed readiness to work with Mr Governor in order to uplift the glory of our darling Sunshine State.
