EndBadGovernenceProtest: Civil Society Coalition Urges, Constructive Dialogue and Shun Protest Amidst National Challenges
The Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance has issued a State of the Nation Address, urging calm and dialogue amidst Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.
In a press conference attended by civil society stakeholders and media representatives, and held in Akure today, the Coalition highlighted the pressing issues facing the nation and offered constructive solutions.
The Coalition, in an address delivered on behalf of the group by Adedotun Ajulo Esq, acknowledged the recent announcement of a new minimum wage, welcoming it with mixed feelings. They emphasized the necessity of regulating market prices to ensure that the new wage truly benefits civil servants. Additionally, the group stressed the importance of addressing the backlog of wages and ensuring the private sector also implements the new minimum wage.
Addressing poverty alleviation, the Coalition called for a revamp of existing policies to align with current realities and eradicate corruption in resource management. They emphasized the need for human capital development programs to boost national productivity, which is crucial for sustainable economic growth.
The recent Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy was applauded, with a call for States to be held accountable for the diversion of local government funds. The Coalition insisted on transparency and accountability to ensure that local governments receive their due resources.
Addressing the issue of the proposed #EndBadGovernance protest, the group acknowledged the right to peaceful protest but urged a reconsideration of the planned protests. They highlighted the potential for such protests to be hijacked by individuals with malicious intent, leading to chaos and destruction.
“Drawing from past experiences like the #ENDSARS protests, we want to warn against uncoordinated demonstrations and the importance of seeking alternative means to voice grievances. A planned protest like this one that lacks leadership can turn to anything and it will eventually draw us backwards than we expect.” The group said.
The Coalition called for the Federal Government and security agencies to restrategize and address the nation’s security challenges effectively, urging the government to engage more with citizens, demonstrate accountability, and show empathy in their dealings.
Highlighting the achievements of youth representatives from Ondo State in the Federal Executive Council, particularly Olubunmi Tunji Ojo in the Ministry of Interior, the Coalition called on the youth to support their representatives and contribute to their success.
“We have a strong belief in the possibility of building a new, better Nigeria through the cooperation and commitment of both leaders and citizens. This is evident in the manner this administration has been going about its business. We, therefore, call for unity and dedicated efforts towards nation-building and shunning any protest at this moment.
Adedotun Ajulo Esq, representing the Coalition, concluded the address by reaffirming the group’s commitment to being the conscience of democratic governance in Nigeria.
