Theme; UNDERSTANDING EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY: A HOLISTIC REVIEW.
The Director-General and the Chairman of Independent Campaign Council for Tinubu/Shettima andSanwoolu/Hamzat, Mr Tayo Ayinde and Cardinal James Omolaja Odunmbaku, played hosts to the stakeholders in education sector of Lagos State on Wednesday 15th Feburary, 2023.
The Director of Education, Dr. Adeyinka Olarinmoye and the entire members of the Directorate gave an opportunity to the actors in the education sector to have a timeout with the leadership of the Directorate. The Governor was represented by the Chief of Staff of Lagos State, who doubles as the DG of the ICC. In his welcome address, he expressed satisfaction in the caliber of people that graced the occasion. He acknowledged that their presence was borne out of the burning desire to improve education standards of Lagos State the center of excellence and aquatic splendor.
The theme of event “Understanding Education in the 21st Century: A holistic View, was delivered by Prof. S.G Odewumi, the pioneer Dean of School of Transport, Lagos State University. The erudite Scholar gave a lecture on history and definitions of education, he delved into what education should be and what it is. In his opinion, Higher National Certficate (HNC)should be brought back to the education system to bridge the gap between when students could wait before getting admissions into higher institutions. While stressing that education should be geared towards meeting societal goals and needs, he observed that Nigerians need to understand the bigger question of holistic education and nation building. The Permanent Secretary of Education, representing the Commissioner of Education promised that all issues raised shall be taken back to the Governor. He stated that there’s no better time for us to embrace functional education as a society.
Hon. Kehinde Bamigbetan emphasized the importance of preparing our children in this digital age with the right skills and knowledge that will make them functional and become an economically independent adults who will contribute greatly to national development. Prof.
Sylvester Odion-Akhaine saw the engagement as a start of a new journey that will chart a novel course for the state of education in Lagos State.
The chairman of ICC, Cardinal Odunmbaku in his closing remarks made the promise that the resolutions and suggestions made shall get to the ears of the governor. While commending the efforts of the organizers and the lecturer for a brilliant outing.
The Director of education in her vote of thanks went back in history to remind the audience that late Alhaji Lateef Jakande laid a solid foundation for education in Lagos state, as a member of the Progressive Awolowo political family, which Asiwaju also built on as a civilian Governor in Lagos state and which the successive governors after him have continued to improve on. It was on this note she solicited for the participants’ supports for electing Asiwaju Tinubu and Shettima as president and reelection of Sanwoolu/Hamzat in the coming elections. She stressed that voting the APC candidates is laying a solid foundation for innovation, excellence and greater opportunities for both teachers and students in the state. She thanked the governor for being a fantastic teacher himself. Expressed her gratitude to the leadership of the ICC for believing in her capacity to lead the education directorate of the ICC, the lead speaker of the occasion, Prof. Odewumi for a job well done. While pouring accolades on the sponsor of the event, Dr. Caleb Adebogun, the owner of Caleb University and other chain of schools in Lagos state. She equally expressed gratitude to the participants for their time to be at the program.
