Two years after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, Nigeria is beginning to experience a quiet but visible transformation. Through a mix of bold reforms, fiscal discipline, and institutional renewal, the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda is changing the national story from one of stagnation to a slow but steady path of renewal.
In a press statement issued by the BTO Renewed Hope Team, key achievements of the Tinubu administration were highlighted, painting a picture of a government committed to laying solid foundations for Nigeria’s future.
When President Tinubu took over in May 2023, the country was in a difficult place. The economy was struggling, insecurity was rife, and the nation was weighed down by structural inefficiencies. In a move that sent immediate ripples through the economy, Tinubu removed long-standing fuel and electricity subsidies on his first day in office. The impact was swift and painful, with transport and food prices rising sharply. But that decision, difficult as it was, helped Nigeria avoid a deeper financial crisis.
By 2024, the country’s fiscal deficit had reduced from 5.4 percent to 3.0 percent of GDP. This was made possible through better tax collection, the unification of the exchange rate, and a more stable foreign reserve, which grew to around 34 billion dollars. The Central Bank ended the multiple exchange rate system, and by the third quarter of 2023, foreign inflows increased by about 3 billion dollars. Oil production also improved, approaching 1.5 million barrels per day.
In July 2025, Nigeria rebased its economy, leading to a 30 percent rise in GDP. This also helped to reduce the nation’s debt-to-GDP ratio to 40 percent, giving Nigeria a healthier fiscal outlook.
The infrastructure drive has been another major feature of the administration. Work on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has progressed rapidly. The first 30-kilometre section was commissioned in May 2025, and the full 700-kilometre project is expected to better connect the economies of the South West and South East.
Foreign investment is also picking up. During a state visit to India in 2023, President Tinubu secured investment pledges worth 14 billion dollars. Since then, there have been more commitments in areas like technology, renewable energy, and manufacturing.
But the Renewed Hope Agenda is not just about the economy or infrastructure. The security and wellbeing of citizens have also received focused attention. One of the most remarkable success stories is the transformation of the Ministry of Interior under Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The ministry, once bogged down by bureaucracy and inefficiency, has been turned into a model of modern public service.
According to the BTO Renewed Hope Team, over 200,000 passport backlogs were cleared in less than three weeks in 2023. In total, more than 1.8 million passports were issued that year, with processing times cut from six weeks to just two. In early 2025, a contactless biometric passport renewal system was launched for Nigerians in Canada and Europe. Today, 40 e-Gates are operating in major airports across Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Enugu, and Port Harcourt. Advanced Passenger Information systems and a new Command and Control Centre have also strengthened border control and migration data tracking.
The ministry has become a key revenue contributor, generating over ₦6 billion in 2024, a 150 percent increase from the previous year. This growth was driven by automation and integrity in services like expatriate quotas, citizenship processing, and marriage registries. Marriage services have also been digitized and expanded to more states for easier access.
Efforts to reform Nigeria’s correctional system have freed more than 4,000 inmates, with over ₦585 million raised to pay fines for low-level offences. Biometric registration of inmates has been introduced, and 10 correctional facilities are undergoing renovation. Plans are underway to relocate congested prisons in urban areas like Ikoyi.
The Fire Service has received a major boost too. New training facilities, 15 rapid-response vehicles, and six heavy-duty fire trucks have been introduced to improve emergency response across cities and rural areas. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has stepped up its operations, dismantling over 1,000 illegal refineries, securing more than 345 convictions, and deploying new surveillance equipment, gunboats, and 10,000 agro-rangers to protect farmlands and mining sites.
The fight against corruption has taken a more strategic turn. Agencies like the EFCC, ICPC, NFIU, and the Code of Conduct Bureau have been reformed, with new leadership and tools. Digital systems and technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence are now being used to track government spending and improve transparency. The ICPC has tracked over 1,700 public projects and recovered large sums of diverted funds.
The Nigerian Air Force has also been active, flying more than 4,500 hours in operations against insurgents and bandits. New aircraft and improved logistics have helped boost operational capacity.
Agriculture remains central to the government’s plan for inclusive growth. Through the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and special agro-processing zones, over one million farmers received fertilizer in 2024, helping to boost crop yields by around 20 percent.
The BTO Renewed Hope Team noted that while many of the reforms have brought short-term pain, particularly for low-income families, the administration’s focus is clear: long-term stability, inclusive growth, and national renewal. The challenge now is to ensure that every reform translates into real improvements in the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians.
As the Renewed Hope Agenda moves forward, it is becoming clear that the seeds of a better Nigeria are being planted. The progress may be gradual, but the signs are beginning to show. A country once stuck in place is now moving forward.
